Chapter 12

Addison

I knocked lightly on the glass pane of my boss, Shannon’s, door before popping my head in. She had to have the most ostentatious office I had ever seen. If the woman weren’t able to sell a steak to a vegan, I would have been convinced her next calling was interior design. The entire back wall was a mirror that reflected the view over the city from the floor-to-ceiling windows on the opposite wall. Henge Cage B shelving spanned over the massive mirror to my front, home to various books and plants. The only wall that wasn’t made of glass was painted a dark moss green and a golden light fixture ordained the ceiling.

She looked up from whatever she had been typing on her laptop and offered me a warm smile that reached all the way to her dark brown eyes before waving me in. The white and gold marbled desk she sat at was modest in size in comparison to the rest of the space. I moved further in, my heels clicking on the smooth tile before I hit the carpet that was positioned beneath the two mahogany colored leather office chairs that sat directly ahead of her desk.

I returned her expressive sentiment, “I was just about to head to lunch and wanted to make sure you didn’t need anything else before I go?”

“Oh, no no no. I’m okay here. You go ahead. Maybe grab a beer or take a shot before you come back. We’ve got a two o’clock with the Ardons.” She shook her head and a tendril of tight, raven curls, spilled from the clip she had loosely placed to hold her overly voluptuous hair at bay.

We grimaced in unison. The Ardons were our worst clients. Despite the fact that they had paid our company to help promote their business for them and provide a detailed marketing strategy based on a full market analysis, they insisted on doing things their own way.

“Oh god, maybe I will,” I rolled my eyes and laughed through a groan as if the suggestion had been a joke. But now, I was seriously considering it. Maybe I could talk Tatum into the bar instead. “Want me to grab you something to eat while I’m out?”

She shook her head and assured me that she wouldn’t be far behind. I hoped that was true because she was always so committed to her work that she rarely stopped for breaks. Often, I was bringing her coffee, water, or food just to make sure she was nourished. Shannon never married due to her career, so I wasn’t exactly sure how she managed to sustain life outside of the office.

A row of elevators were available adjacent to Shannon’s office. I gave her one last wave and spun on my heel, destined for the main level of our building. Since there were still ten minutes until our agreed meeting time, I figured I could use the opportunity to get some fresh air and peruse the lineup of food trucks Shannon had chosen for the day.
